...We arrived in Stavanger early in the morning of July 4 after a two day crossing of the North Sea from Scotland. At that latitude the sun barely set at midnight so that it remained light all the way across. We anchored in a sheltered bay and after a while were visited by a white frocked customs inspector who came out in a small motorboat and checked our passports and our “ship’s” documents. He then welcomed us to Norway, wished us a happy 4th of July and told us where we could dock our boat at the local yacht club.
...Stavanger was a bustling city with brightly painted houses crowded around the harbor.. Most houses were near the water and so instead of cars, most people had boats to get around in.
...Oil had recently been discovered in the North Sea and we frequently ran into groups of Texans in restaurants and bars highly visible in their ten gallon hats and Texas drawls.
...Rosalind drew this on a day when a bright sun and a brisk wind whipped up whitecaps and spray in the colorful harbor.
